On the roof top of 101 Constitution
Avenue, Washington, D.C., on a
cool and clear evening with a spectacular panoramic view of the U.S.
Capital, the Congressional Wine Caucus held a highly successful wine
auction that raised $112,000 for the Bush/Clinton Katrina relief effort.
Over 350 members of the Washington, D.C. and area businesses, lobbying
and wine-interested community attended the October 5, 2005 event which
featured 127
individual wine lots (one special edition bottle to a case plus of
wine) for the silent auction and 24 rare wine lots (special magnums and
signature wine bottles) that were bid on in the live auction.
Contributions to the auction were from a consortium of California wine
organizations, including the Wine Institute and WineAmerica.
Also,
wine contributions from wineries in New York, Ohio, Oregon and Virginia
were represented.
The VWGA acted as a facilitator for the event, communicating the call
for wine donations to all Virginia wineries and to other state wine
associations. In response to the VWGA’s invitation to
participate, the
King Family Winery, Rebec and Breaux wineries made wine contributions.
Additionally, the VWGA provided two mixed cases of Virginia wines,
along with two gift baskets of Virginia food products, which included a
bottle each of Horton’s Viognier Sparkling Wine. All Virginia
wine
contributions brought in over $1,000 in the silent auction.
